CM Pinto Supports Developer on Masonic Project<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Ignores Environmental Hazards, Awaits Appeal Decisions<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto<\/span> has<\/span> effectively sided with the\u00a0Masonic Temple and its developer, Perseus, as they\u00a0pursue\u00a0their controversial, environmentally dangerous, luxury\u00a0apartment\u00a0project\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>at 15th\u00a0and S\u00a0Streets, NW.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Pinto voiced her position last Wednesday when Nick\u00a0DelleDonne, president of Dupont East Civic Action Association (DECAA), asked her to <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>insist<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>DCRA revoke current\u00a0excavation permits.\u00a0 The Councilmember\u00a0said she would wait for the court and\u00a0regulatory\u00a0appeals to be decided before taking action on recently disclosed environmental issues.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhile CM Pinto waits, the Masons are not,” said DelleDonne. “Their bulldozers are recklessly releasing pollutants\u00a0into the soil and water table, causing vibrations to\u00a0hundred-year-old\u00a0homes and buildings nearby and pumping water to the extent that subsidence is inevitable, damaging surrounding buildings.”\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Councilmember admitted that she had not read DECAA\u2019s letter detailing the\u00a0environmental\u00a0dangers, reported by the developer's own consultant.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“It is clear the Masons are trying to create a fait-accompli – proceeding with the project, before appeals are heard and before construction permits are approved – that will be impossible to tear down, even if they lose their appeals many months from now.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“It's not too late for our Councilmember to show her support for the residents,” said DECAA Vice President Iris McCollum Green. “We want to meet with her to make sure that she understands the gravity and hazards of the project if it is allowed to continue, and that she acts accordingly and soon.”<\/span><\/p>\n
