Wilson Building &#8212; Since the end of June, 2018, the <a href=\"http:\/\/dccouncil.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>District of Columbia City Council<\/strong><\/a> has had fiery hearings and more explosive ones are upcoming.<\/p>\n<h5><strong><em>DISPOSITION OF PUBLIC LAND<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>During the last week of June, many people spoke out to protect the Crummel School at a joint hearing held by Councilmembers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marycheh.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary Cheh<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CM_McDuffie\/status\/968129498523885569\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kenyan McDuffie<\/a>. <strong>The Crummel School<\/strong> is a public asset in the center of Ward 5&#8217;s Ivy City neighborhood. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sarosholpadwala\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarosh Olpadwala of DMPED<\/a> wants to give the land around the school away to a real estate speculator for new luxury condos and a fish market development. There will be some &#8220;affordable&#8221; housing included. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EmpowerDC\/status\/1015007900920631297\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ivy City families and neighbors<\/strong><\/a> testified in overwhelming opposition to any project that paves over the vast majority of the open area around the school at a time when the community desires green recreation space &amp; experiential learning to uplift a community struggling with air quality and health issues, not to mention poverty. <a href=\"http:\/\/dc.granicus.com\/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=2&amp;clip_id=4591\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Link to Video of Hearing<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 The record is still open.<\/p>\n<h5><strong><em>NOISE &#8220;ABATEMENT&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>On July 2, 2018, local DC artists and buskers were <a href=\"http:\/\/dc.granicus.com\/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=2&amp;clip_id=4604\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">put on notice<\/a> of an &#8220;emergency&#8221; bill that give discretion to DC authorities to jail people who may be playing music or speaking out on the sidewalks and streets of DC. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/jay.mills.14203\/posts\/10102009700046880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kymone Freeman<\/strong><\/a>, of WEACT Radio, called the legislation for cultural &#8220;gentrification.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/jay.mills.14203\/videos\/pcb.10102009700046880\/10102009696638710\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jack Evans, Councilmember of Ward 2<\/a> cheered on the bill saying he was tired &#8220;the guys banging on big bucket drums . . . its horrible.&#8221; <em><strong>DC Culture makers and free-speech advocates will have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/katea.stitt\/posts\/10156153007753429\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press conference<\/a> at the Gallery Place Metro on July 9.<\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h5><strong>THIS WEEK: BARRY FARMS \/\/ DC GENERAL \/\/ SCHOOLS TRANSPARENCY \/\/ DC WATER BILLS \/\/ DC POLICE IN WARDS 7 AND 8 \/\/ DCRA ACCOUNTABILITY<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The week after the fourth of July (7\/9\/18&#8211;) has a Council calendar key public hearings and roundtables:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em><strong>DEMOLITION AND PEOPLE&#8217;S LIVES AT DC GENERAL SHELTER <\/strong><\/em>Pausing the demolition of<strong> DC General shelter<\/strong> until all families are relocated safely in appropriate housing (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legalclinic.org\/dc-council-we-urge-you-to-vote-yes-on-the-d-c-general-resident-relocation-emergency-act-of-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a sign on letter has gone out to the Council<\/a>).
