First Accident Shows Hazards of DDOT 17<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span>\u00a0St. Bike Plan<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt was like a bomb went off,\u201d said an observer, when one of the heavy-duty Waste Management trash trucks hit a Jersey wall and a tire exploded outside the restaurant Floriana, near 17<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and Q\u00a0<\/span>Sts<\/span>., NW, Saturday afternoon, September 11. No one was injured in what is the first recorded accident since the poorly planned and installed DDOT 17<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span>\u00a0St. Bike Plan.\u00a0Onlookers paused to reflect,\u00a0<\/span>How<\/span>\u00a0many accidents lay ahead and at what cost to the community?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The accident occurred when the truck\u00a0emerged\u00a0from the alley at about 3 miles an hour.\u00a0\u00a0It turned right into the narrow, 11-foot-wide traffic lane but could not avoid one of the barriers that now dot the street to protect the\u00a0<\/span>streateries<\/span>\u2014 the obtrusive barriers are a key part of the landscape in DDOT\u2019s bike plan. The concrete Jersey walls are affixed with steel hooks protruding\u00a0from their sides so they can be hooked together to divide traffic lanes on highways. A hook caught the tire, which exploded like a bomb, seriously damaging the rim, and shoving aside the Floriana fencing.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThis accident shows just one of the many problems with DDOT\u2019s 17<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Street Bike Plan,\u201d said\u00a0Nick\u00a0<\/span>DelleDonne<\/span>, president of the Dupont East Civic Action Association (DECAA) which is leading opposition to the Bike Plan.\u00a0 \u201cIt shows how wrong Councilmember Brooke Pinto was in March announcing a \u2018breakthrough\u2019 in the Plan by funneling all traffic into one narrow lane.\u00a0\u00a0We are renewing, yet again, our request to her and Acting Transportation Director Everett Lott to meet the community on 17th Street and see why DDOT\u2019s Plan must be revoked.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

DECAA has organized a petition drive with a goal of 1,000 signers\u00a0<\/span><\/span>https:\/\/chng.it\/R6Z8QLyL<\/span><\/span><\/a>. Residents will be at Safeway Saturday to sign up neighbors. DECAA has organized a DC Coalition on DDOT Bike Plans to\u00a0assist\u00a0neighborhoods who are fighting similar intransigence from DDOT throughout the city. The Coalition\u2019s\u00a0Facebook page invites photos and stories related to DDOT Bike Plans around the city.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/dccoalitiononddotbikelanes\/<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Here are some pictures showing the damage. One picture shows yellow bollards\u00a0on both sides of the alley, a vain attempt to defend against heavy truck traffic in alleys never designed to take the traffic.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
