Norouzi Challenges OP Director Trueblood\u00a0 <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

on New \u2018Racial Equity Lens\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

At the Grassroot Planning Coalition meeting, Saturday, Andrew Trueblood, director of the\u00a0Mayor's\u00a0Office of Planning, was asked how the new \u201cracial equity lens,” established in the new DC\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Comprehensive Plan, is being applied.\u00a0 Trueblood answered that it would apply twice in some cases, once in planning, \u201cbut once certainly through zoning.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His assurance was immediately\u00a0challenged\u00a0by Parisa Norouzi, Executive Director of the Coalition that convened the meeting.\u00a0 “Nothing's changed,” she said. In fact, when the Zoning Commission was asked to fulfill the city\u2019s 'right-of-return' commitment for\u00a0those displaced from Barry Farm, the Commission said that's 'outside our authority.'\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This \u201cshallow language comes from the Mayor,”\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Norouzi told Coalition participants.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWe have to push back from every angle…<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>OP can demand more, but will they?”\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The amended Comprehensive Plan calls for a “racial equity lens” to be applied by many agencies, especially in the city's planning and zoning functions. However, so far “nothing's changed.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The session also mapped a\u00a0<\/span><\/b>strategy to develop a core of community defenders – a team of volunteers to track OP and zoning development projects as they arise,\u00a0using the zoning calendar and DC Register,<\/b>\u00a0so timely demands can be made from the neighborhoods throughout the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As transportation is an element in the Comp Plan, Nick DelleDonne, president of Dupont East Civic Action Association and a member of the steering committee, announced the formation of a city-wide Coalition on DDOT Bike Plans<\/b> to help neighborhoods push back. While providing a measure of safety for cyclists, protected bike lanes encourage speeding and present a hazard to seniors, toddlers, the disabled, and the rest of us, particularly when DDOT is pushing them through congested commercial and social streets. The Coalition will hold a rally in Ivy City, 1900 West Virginia Ave., NE, Friday, Sept. 25, 11 am-1 pm<\/span><\/p>\n
