{"id":2797,"date":"2021-09-22T02:52:01","date_gmt":"2021-09-22T02:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dcfeedback.com\/fit2print\/?p=2797"},"modified":"2021-10-12T23:57:14","modified_gmt":"2021-10-12T23:57:14","slug":"fwd-clevelandpark-housing-advocates-press-bowser-administration-seize-opportunities-develop-affordable-housing-in-ward-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.dcfeedback.com\/fit2print\/dc\/2797","title":{"rendered":"Housing Advocates Press Bowser Administration: Seize Opportunities, Develop Affordable Housing in Ward 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"gmail_quote\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ward3housingjustice.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><b><span style=\"color:black\">WARD 3 HOUSING JUSTICE<\/span><\/b><\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-270184215022928098qt\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-left:0in;text-align:left\"><b>Wardman Hotel Strategy Team | NW Opportunity Partners Community Development Corporation<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0in;margin-left:0in;text-align:left\"><b><span style=\"color:#ff4040\">CREATING EQUITABLE HOUSING IN DC&#39;S WARD 3\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/b><b><span style=\"color:black\">Housing Advocates Press the Bowser Administration to Seize Opportunities to\u00a0 Develop Affordable Housing in Ward 3<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/b><span style=\"color:black\">A group of affordable housing and community-led development advocates from Ward 3 and across the District met Friday with a team of District leaders led by Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) John Falcicchio<\/span> <span style=\"color:black\">to discuss ways in which the Bowser administration could achieve its goal of 1990 new units of affordable housing in Rock Creek West (mostly Ward 3) by 2025.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"color:black\">The advocates, from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ward3housingjustice.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ward 3 Housing Justice<\/a><span style=\"color:black\"> (W3HJ), the Wardman Hotel Strategy Team (WHST), and the newly formed NW Opportunity Partners Community Development Corporation (NWOP-CDC), expressed frustration that the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ward3housingjustice.org\/post\/affordable-housing-in-ward-3-it-s-not-too-late-to-make-a-deal-at-the-wardman-hotel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mayor\u2019s administration had not taken action on the proposed Wardman Hotel conversion to a mixed-use community.<\/a><span style=\"color:black\"> \u201cLarge sites near Metro, schools, and other amenities are hard to find in Ward 3; you have to grab them or it could be years before you get another chance,\u201d said Margaret Dwyer, W3HJ convenor and Friendship Heights resident.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"color:black\">The advocates told the government representatives, including Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) Director Polly Donaldson and Office of Planning (OP) Director Andrew Trueblood, that it will be a difficult task to build community trust when ideas like the Wardman Hotel conversion &#8212; a concept identified and developed by unhoused and impacted Black residents, and supported by developers and neighbors &#8212; are left on the table.\u00a0 Deputy Mayor Falcicchio confirmed to the group that the administration had not talked to the presumed new owner of the hotel property about producing significant amounts of affordable housing as part of redevelopment.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"color:black\">Director Donaldson pointed out that new federal and city funding offers more possibilities for Rock Creek West (mostly Ward 3) than had been previously available.\u00a0 \u201cThe funding is only useful if it is used to create opportunities.\u00a0 Supporting development as usual is not what we are looking for,\u201d said Meg Maguire, Chair of the NWOP-CDC.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"color:black\">All participants in the meeting agreed that Friendship Heights offers an\u00a0 opportunity for substantial family housing, but it is essential that all planning prioritizes affordable housing and includes not only current but also future residents who will be able to live there.\u00a0 \u201cWe need the Office of Planning to bring everyone &#8212; advocates, neighbors, potential residents, developers, city agencies &#8212; to the table from the very beginning in an open and transparent process,\u201d said Margaret Dwyer. \u201cWard 3 is at a turning point.
