Everett Lott, the acting director of the District Department\u00a0of Transportation\u00a0(DDOT), faced a tough confirmation last Tuesday, Oct. 26.\u00a0 While a few witnesses supported him, the clear majority were opposed to how he is cutting out the\u00a0community that DDOT is supposed to serve,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>as he\u00a0executes Mayor Bowser's command to \u201cexpedite and streamline\u201d implementation.\u00a0 Councilmember Mary Cheh, who chairs the Committee on Transportation and the Environment, admonished Lott more than once: “You can\u2019t cut corners. You can\u2019t cut out the ANCs and community engagement.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen called the 8-hour session one of the most \u201cbruising\u201d he'd experienced. At-large CM Elissa Silverman asked: \u201cI don\u2019t want to hear vague generalizations. How will you get us there? What will you do first and what second, specifically?\u201d This grilling was\u00a0echoed\u00a0by Ward 7 CM Vincent Gray.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Residents and businesses from Dupont Circle raised objections to DDOT's implementation of the Bike Plan on 17th<\/sup><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>St. NW, calling it \u2018dangerous by design.\u2019 Ward 2 Councilmember CM Pinto, who had walked by their rally on\u00a017th Street on Oct 1, asked Lott for continued cooperation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ANC\u2019s and members of the city-wide Coalition on DDOT Bike Plans were among the most critical. In addition to being ignored and bypassed, they pointed out that so-called \u2018protected\u2019 bike lanes were dangerous for pedestrians, especially seniors, toddlers and the handicapped.\u00a0 Dedicated cycle tracks remove needed parking and delivery options for businesses. The Coalition called on Lott for a TownHall on Bike Plans<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The hearing record remains open until Nov.9.\u00a0 The committee will prepare a report, which will be the subject of committee mark-up before it sends the confirmation resolution to the full Council for a vote.<\/span><\/p>\n
