Update: Dupont Association Urges DDOT to Remove\u00a017th St.\u00a0Bike Lane<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Dupont Circle Citizens Association (DCCA)<\/span>,<\/span> the leading civic group in the community, voted Monday, Nov. 1, to call on the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to remove the “Protected” Bike Lane on 17<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup> St.<\/span> in East Dupont. T<\/span>h<\/span>e resolution, which passed overwhelmingly, allies DCCA with the Dupont East Civic Action Association (DECAA) which has led the opposition to the DDOT bike plan since a year ago last June.\u00a0\u00a0The vote aligns DCCA with opposition to the Dupont Circle ANC2B and with the city-wide opposition to DDOT's bike plans.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bike Plan, according to the DCCA resolution, has made retail deliveries difficult, eliminated patron parking and jeopardized the livable\/walkable community. As DECCA has extensively\u00a0documented, the so-called 'Protected Bike Lanes' (PBL), formerly known as Cycle Tracks, are dangerous to cyclists and pedestrians because they encourage speeding, the running<\/span> of<\/span> stop-signs and traffic lights and going the wrong way on one-way streets. PBLs are confusing and hazardous to seniors, children and the handicapped.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The DCCA resolution was introduced by former ANC Commissioner Ed Hanlon and seconded by Kerry Kemp. In the discussion, an objection was raised that study was needed to show that PBLs are dangerous.\u00a0 But DECCA head\u00a0Nick DelleDonne replied that it is DDOT's duty\u00a0to assure the benefits before installation, to communicate fully with the public, to evaluate post-installation impacts and be willing to make appropriate changes. These responsibilities fall to DDOT, not the community.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The DCCA vote included direction that the resolution be sent to the Mayor and the Council.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
