Masonic Construction OKd without Discussion of \u2018Twisted\u2019 Language<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Late Wednesday afternoon, the\u00a0Bowser-dominated Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA), in a\u00a0lightening decision,\u00a0gave the go-ahead to the controversial construction at the Masonic Temple at 15th & S Sts., NW. The approval was made without discussion of how\u00a0the Masons and their developer,\u00a0Perseus,\u00a0have twisted the land-use regulations beyond recognition. For example, to fit their oversize building onto the new postage-stamp size lot, the Masons are rotating the Temple 90 degrees, pretending S Street is the front (when in fact it\u2019s on 16th<\/sup> St.) which puts an 11-foot wall in the rear yard, when only 4 feet is allowed. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The emergency motion to stop construction was\u00a0filed by the neighborhood civic association,\u00a0Dupont East Civic Action Association (DECAA). BZA made its decision without asking for participation of the attorneys from any of the parties.\u00a0\u00a0Board Chair Lorna John remarked, the developer proceeds \u201cat risk\u201d should BZA decide the main case in DECAA\u2019s favor in a hearing set for February 22, 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe decision only points again to the need to preserve green\u00a0space and to\u00a0push back on unwanted displacement development by the Bowser\u00a0Administration,\u201d said\u00a0DECAA president Nick DelleDonne.\u00a0\u201cThis is another example of the city\u00a0squandering\u00a0precious\u00a0resources with policies that\u00a0displace longtime,\u00a0low-income\u00a0black and brown residents.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
