City Board Says 300-ton Roof Not a 'Roof,'<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Denies Residents\u2019\u00a0Appeal\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Construction Continues on\u00a0Massive Masonic Temple\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

The Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) this morning affirmed the city\u2019s claim that the 300-ton roof over the Masonic Temple at 16th<\/sup>\u00a0and S Streets, NW, is\u00a0not\u00a0<\/i>a roof but a 'dispensable embellishment' that does not keep the weather from the Temple sanctuary. Each of the BZA members,\u00a0Chair Fred Hill, Vice Chair Lorna John, Carl Blake,\u00a0Zoning Commissioner Peter May and\u00a0Chris Smith (by absentee vote)\u00a0spoke to deny the appeal.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The appeal was filed on behalf of residents by Dupont East Civic Action Association (DECAA) to stop the construction of the Masons\u2019 proposed oversized, inappropriate luxury apartment building to the rear of the historic landmark Masonic Temple, blocking public view of the rear of the world-renown architectural marvel.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt's ridiculous to say that this massive,\u00a0300-ton\u00a0structure\u00a0which keeps the weather out of the Temple is an 'unnecessary embellishment,'” said\u00a0DECAA president Nick DelleDonne.\u00a0 “We will make the decision historic with our appeal. The days when twisting regulations to benefit developers at the expense of the community will end.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Separately, DECAA\u2019s lawsuit against the city on the Masonic luxury development was heard Feb. 10 by the DC Court of Appeals which remanded 8 of 9 issues to the DC Superior Court and took the 9th<\/sup>\u00a0issue under advisement.<\/span><\/p>\n
