Ward 2 residents and others will protest DDOT's\u00a0dictated,\u00a0confusing\u00a0and anti-business 17th<\/sup>\u00a0St. Bike Plan at DC Councilmember Brooke Pinto's\u00a0bike tour\u00a0on\u00a0Saturday morning, May 21. CM\u00a0Pinto has steadfastly refused to respond to calls for her support of a comprehensive evaluation of the reckless and dangerous bike\u00a0installation on\u00a017th St. in\u00a0Dupont Circle.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The 17th<\/sup>\u00a0St. Bike Plan includes the dangerous Protected Bike Lanes (PBL) on a congested commercial street, removal of shopper parking and confining all traffic to a narrow single lane, including deliveries, cars and cyclists.\u00a0 It has\u00a0created a hazardous environment for pedestrians, especially seniors with walkers,\u00a0the disabled\u00a0and\u00a0toddlers on a thread from daycare. DDOT's Plan recklessly jeopardizes the livable\/walkable community.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The rally is sponsored by the city-wide Coalition on DDOT Bike Plans which now includes a dozen partners in neighborhoods around the city.\u00a0 CM Pinto\u2019s bike tour carefully avoids 17th<\/sup>\u00a0St. where residents and merchants have been asking her for a meeting since March 2021, when she announced \u201ca major breakthrough\u201d in the plan for a traffic realignment.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In November last year, the Dupont Circle Citizens Association, passed a resolution that joined DECCA's call for DDOT to remove the protected bike lane. In December, the Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets, led by an avid cyclist, noted that the 17th<\/sup>\u00a0St. Bike Lane was not being used by cyclists and called for an evaluation to remove it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
