{"id":3135,"date":"2022-12-15T20:03:50","date_gmt":"2022-12-15T20:03:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dcfeedback.com\/fit2print\/?p=3135"},"modified":"2022-12-15T20:08:21","modified_gmt":"2022-12-15T20:08:21","slug":"fwd-press-alert-the-legacy-1-public-land-deals-may-continue-in-the-district-of-columbia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.dcfeedback.com\/fit2print\/dc\/3135","title":{"rendered":"Fwd: Press Alert: The Legacy $1 Public Land Deals May Continue in the District of Columbia"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"postie-post\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"gmail_quote\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Press Alert &#8212; DC for Reasonable Development<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><i><b><font size=\"6\">The Legacy of $1 Public Land Deals May Continue in the District of Columbia<\/font><\/b><\/i><\/div>\n<p><b>Washington, D.C.<\/b> &#8212; Almost ten years ago <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.npr.org\/deals-for-developers-wamu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>WAMU issued this scathing report showing how DC is being fleeced by the developer-class<\/b><\/a> with the help of connected friends in the Mayor&#39;s Office (DMPED) and on the City Council. <\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"http:\/\/video.oct.dc.gov\/VOD\/DCC\/2022_12\/12_06_22_COW_1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>last week&#39;s legislative hearing<\/b><\/a> (4hrs 35min) numerous public properties were thrust forward for surplus and disposition, threatening to continue this legacy of $1 D.C. land deals at the last minute of this Council session.<\/p>\n<p>Several Councilmembers asked for these land giveaways be put on the non-consent agenda and a few ultimately voted against the surplussing legislation in the first vote.<\/p>\n<p><u><font size=\"4\">The push back was vocal from Councilmembers:<\/font><\/u><br \/><font size=\"4\"><b><br \/>Recent election winner, Councilmember Anita Bonds:<\/b><\/font> &#8220;<i>I really think that doing the dispositions on these surplus properties we really need to slow down enough&#8221;<\/i> pointing to the fact that there aren&#39;t many public parcels left to giveaway and that there isn&#39;t a comprehensive plan for our public land. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;You can&#39;t buy a Snickers bar for a $1&#8221;<\/i> said <font size=\"4\"><b>Trayon White, Ward 8 Councilmember.<\/b><\/font><\/p>\n<p><b><font size=\"4\">Councilmember and 2022 Mayoral candidate, Robert White<\/font><\/b> said, <i>&#8220;We need to do a lot better&#8221; and said he&#39;s working on reforming the public property surplus legislation.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b><font size=\"4\">Ward 4 Councilmember Janeese Lewis George<\/font><\/b> pointed out that the deals before the Council now (except for one) are in fact divestment from the public and largely benefit wealthy developers.\u00a0 <br \/><font size=\"4\"><b><br \/>At Large Christina Henderson<\/b><\/font>: &#8220;We are giving away so much land for housing, and yet there&#39;s no planning for schools, or parks, or recreation centers nearby,&#8221; pointing to the lack of comprehensive planning of our public land and service by DMPED in these giveaways.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these points, the legacy of $1 deals for public properties in D.C. may continue at the last legislative hearing of this Council period, next Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The first vote went forward with a sheepish yes from At Large Councilmember Robert White and full throated support from Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie.<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"4\"><b>Council Chair, Phil Mendelson offered: <i>&#8220;It&#39;s a function of economics, <u>I can&#39;t say what the economics [of the proposed deals] are<\/u>.
