The\nunderground water cistern and above ground sand silos and water pump\nhouses were built at the turn of the 19th century to cure the city of\nwater borne illnesses. It became a gathering place for residents to\nrest and recreate together. One of the first de-facto integrated\nspaces in DC, kite flying contests and community-driven baseball\nfields were just some of the ways community members created joy in\nthe Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park neighborhoods. The site cleaned\nDC’s tap water, chemical-free, until 1986. It was egregiously\nmothballed and shut off from the community since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Mayor’s current\nplans would bring substantial additional traffic to a region of the\ncity already disproportionately impacted by high asthma rates. As the\nclimate changes and brings worsening air quality to cities across the\nworld, Bowser would move us backwards by refusing to listen to\ncommunity needs for health and wellness.
