It was an indirect slap at the Mayor\u2019s <b>#BuildMore\u00a0<\/b>development policies promoting large projects with minimal affordable housing, especially for families<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:rgb(51,51,51)\">\u00a0 As demonstrated by the city&#39;s demographic trends, this policy encourages gentrification and the displacement of Blacks<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black\"> and<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:rgb(51,51,51)\"> minorities from the city. Examples cited include the McMillan and Howard University Divinity School<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black\"> projects,<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:rgb(51,51,51)\"> both in Ward 5,<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:rgb(51,51,51)\">and the oversized and inappropriate project proposed for the Masonic Temple at 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0and S Streets NW, in Dupont East.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black\"><span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom:0in;line-height:normal\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:black\">\u00a0<span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:107%;font-family:Arial,sans-serif\">Equally unanimous and even passionate was the candidates\u2019 call for regulation and enforcement of bikers whose behavior was described as hazardous for pedestrians. DECAA represents the community on 15<sup>th<\/sup> St., the site of DC\u2019s celebrated first protected bike lanes. The effort to make cyclists safer with bike lanes has introduced new hazards for pedestrians. <span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:107%;font-family:Arial,sans-serif\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:107%;font-family:Arial,sans-serif\">Responding to a question for innovative solutions to the housing shortage, housing the homeless and the working poor, candidate Will Merrifield described the self-funding plan for social housing.\u00a0\u00a0 <span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:107%;font-family:Arial,sans-serif\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:107%;font-family:Arial,sans-serif\">DECAA\u2019s first candidates forum was attended by most of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:107%;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:rgb(51,51,51)\">At-Large Council candidates, including <\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:107%;font-family:Arial,sans-serif\">Claudia Barragan, Marcus Goodwin, Christina Henderson, Ed Lazere, Will Merrifield, Vincent Orange, Alexander M. Padro, Monica Palacio, Marya Pickering, Eric M. Rogers, Michangelo \u201cDoctor Mic\u201d Scruggs, and Ann C. Wilcox<span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:107%;font-family:Arial,sans-serif\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif\">The Forum was moderated impeccably and judiciously by our neighbor Iris McCollum Green, Esquire, who serves as DECAA\u2019s vice president. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;color:rgb(51,51,51)\">DECAA is a 501(c)3 neighborhood, non-profit organization, initially chartered to oppose the Masonic Temple development.
