News Release \u2014 Southwest Community Awards Ceremony <\/span><\/p>\n

July 12, 2021<\/span><\/p>\n

Southwest showed appreciation to individuals and organizations that helped community through COVID pandemic during awards ceremony on July 10.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

SOUTHWEST, WASHINGTON, D.C.<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 An ad hoc group of residents formed to recognize nine individuals and organizations that helped the community through the COVID pandemic or have shown a lifelong commitment to the community. An awards ceremony was held on Saturday, July 10 at the Southwest Farmer\u2019s Market. Dr. E. Faye Williams served as the mistress of ceremony. Ms. Vyllorya Evans and Mr. Christopher Williams served as co-chairs of the event.<\/span><\/p>\n

Community Support Award<\/b> \u2013 This award recognized efforts that ensured community resilience through food distribution, clothing giveaways, and other forms of community support. Awardees<\/i><\/b>: <\/i>4th St SW CVS Employees, 4th St SW Safeway Employees, Christ United Methodist Church and Ward 6 Mutual Aid, Ms. Thelma Jones, Ms. Christine Spencer<\/span><\/p>\n

Neighborhood Pride Award<\/b> \u2013 This award recognized volunteer beautification efforts to ensure that Greenleaf and its adjacent areas remain free of refuse. Awardee<\/i><\/b>: Ms. Yodie Baker<\/span><\/p>\n

Courage to Lead Award<\/b> \u2013 This award recognized the leadership of Ms. Walker to face challenges in the redevelopment plans for Greenleaf and related to ensuring quality housing for residents. Awardee:<\/i><\/b> Ms. A. Dena Walker<\/span><\/p>\n

Lifetime Perseverance Award<\/b> \u2013 This award recognized Ms. Bishop\u2019s community leadership and lifetime perseverance, including her recent graduation. Awardee: <\/i><\/b>Ms. Patricia Bishop<\/span><\/p>\n

Lifetime Community Leadership Award<\/b> \u2013 This award recognized ANC6D Commissioner Rhonda Hamilton\u2019s lifetime achievement in unwavering community leadership and environmental justice advocacy. Awardee:<\/i><\/b> Commissioner Rhonda Hamilton<\/span><\/p>\n
