Re-imagining Reeves Study
AGENCY: DMPED / OP
• ADDRESS: 2000 14th St. NW
• WARD: 1
• SIZE: 97,600 sf
• ZONING: ARTS-4, RA-2 • NEIGHBORHOOD: U Street
• RFP RELEASE: Fall 2019
The Reeves Center, a government office building at 14th and U Street NW, and other District owned properties surrounding the U Street corridor are poised for redevelopment. The District wishes to conduct a study to evaluate how these sites can contribute to a vibrant public life in the surrounding neighborhood, and what kinds of uses best balance public needs and economic development potential.
Public life is what people create when they connect with each other in public spaces—the streets, plazas, parks, and city spaces between and within buildings. Public life is about the
everyday activities that people naturally take part in when they spend time with each other outside their homes, workplaces, and cars. Public life studies analyze observed human
behavior in shared spaces to inform policy, regulations, and design of the built environment.
Building from this understanding of the social context, a market analysis will provide the District government and community information about what kinds of housing, commercial,
and/or cultural options are feasible within the U Street area. In addition to the Reeves Center, the study will also include the Fire and EMS property at 16th and U Street and the Department of Parks and Recreation property at 1325 S Street NW.
