Community Demands will be made –

Stop Excavation at the Masonic Temple over Environmental Hazards,

Stop DDOT 17th St. Bike Plan for Comprehensive Review

Dupont East Civic Action Association (DECAA) will demand that in view of the extensive environmental hazards that recently surfaced at the site of the excavation at the Masonic Temple at 15th and S Streets, NW, that all work on the excavation immediately stop until safeguards can be put in place, namely that soil and water be tested for contaminants from an underground oil and gas storage tank and from PEPCO’s underground vault contaminated with PCBs. DOEE confirms contaminated soil was found. DECAA requests the documentation of it and the extent of the contamination, and what steps the Masons are taking at abatement. Vibrations caused by drilling have raised concerns about damage to homes and buildings.

On DDOT 17th St Bike Plan, DECAA will demand to reject the extension of the Plan north to Florida Ave until the main Plan undergoes a comprehensive review. The Plan was installed without preliminary studies and without the customary and required community engagement.  It is dangerous to pedestrians; it makes deliveries to the local businesses chaotic, and it is confusing to all users of 17th St.
