Bike Lane Advocates Distort Civic Indignation in Twitter Storm

After Walking Tour of DDOTs 17th St. Bike Plan

A video clip from our recent walking tour of 17th St. with staff from the Mayor’s office and DDOT, an event organized by Dupont East Civic Action Association (DECAA), has received wide circulation on Twitter. It is a doctored video that distorts what happened and defames our civic organization.

The DECAA Board apologizes for the intemperate volley of indignation Nick DelleDonne used at the event.  But Nick was addressing adults. We assure you the children had already walked by. DelleDonne’s indignation was directed at Dan Adler, Ward 2 representative of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA). He advocates Protected Bike Lanes (PBL) where DECAA and our Coalition on DDOT Bike Plans have sometimes opposed them, including 17th St. You cannot see Adler in the Tweet, so attached is a photo of him at our Oct. 1 rally, “Dangerous by Design.” It shows him wrestling DelleDonne for our mic to sabotage our protected rights of assembly and speech. (Photo attached of Adler.)

We welcome constructive dialogue, including disagreement, but Adler and others who provoke DECAA and sabotage its efforts to express its views must be confronted and stopped. Adler and Greg Wahl, a PBL supporter, have repeatedly engaged in a disruptive pattern of conduct in an attempt to undermine DECAAs free-speech rights, and their actions on Nov. 18 were just another incident.  For example:

·         Adler and Wahl disrupted our petition signing at the Safeway by shouting as we tried to speak with people. We twice had to call the police. Four MPD police officers arrived responding to our calls.

·         Earlier this year when we tried to film a Safeway delivery truck having trouble backing into the loading dock, Wahl jumped into the camera trying to stop us from filming. (Video attached of Wahl.)

We will not be intimidated by Adler, Wahl or WABA.  We will continue advocating the rights of the disabled. We believe that DDOT’s Bike Plans violate the Americans with Disabilities Act, and we will continue standing up and saying so despite the attempted intimidation.
