CM Allen to Ask about EMS Passage through NC Ave Bike Plan

Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen held his regular neighborhood office hours last Friday, April 29, where he was greeted with vocal opposition to the two Protected Bike Lanes (PBLs) that the Bowser Administration intends to install on 1300 block of North Carolina Ave NE in Capitol Hill East.

Protesters explained how the Plan will change the road to one-way and narrow the traffic lane with 2-way curbside bike lanes and a row of parked cars. Residents asked for data that the Plan would not impede emergency vehicles eastbound to Ward 7 as DDOT has come under fire for installing major traffic changes without studies to back them up. Allen said he would inquire. The new one-way traffic Plan will redirect more than 300 cars daily to Maury Elementary School and to East Capitol St., according to DDOT.

Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6A dismissed these concerns about ADA, FEMS/MPD access, and by the elderly as it approved the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Plan last month.

The DDOT comment period under the Notice of Intent (NOI) is officially open until May 2 and protesters plan to tell the agency that the Plan is unworkable, reckless and dangerous for school children, seniors, and people with mobility limitations.  Part of the city-wide Coalition on DDOT Bike Plans, opponents of the Plan are alerting neighbors, including in adjacent ANC 6B, with yard signs and other materials.
