Bowser Asks DMPED to Meet on Harrington Purchase for Affordable Housing –

Councilmembers McDuffie, Pinto, Parker, Nadeau Also Express Interest to Wardman Team

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has asked her chief responsible for Downtown revitalization to meet with the Wardman Hotel Strategy Team in its quest to have the city buy the century-old Harrington Hotel for desperately needed affordable housing and spark downtown renewal. Wardman Hotel came to be known as the signal missed opportunity for affordable housing two years ago when it sold at auction to a developer. Mayor Bower asked her Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) last week to meet with the Wardman Team to explore the possibilities and take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring residents and vitality Downtown.

So far a number of Councilmembers have expressed interest. Councilmember At-Large Kenyan McDuffie, who two years ago asked Bowser to add $140 M in her budget to buy the Wardman, said to count him on board. Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto representing Downtown is interested. The staff of Councilmember Robert White who chairs the Council Committee on Housing and recently called a Round Table on Social Housing, will meet with the Wardman Team next week. Councilmembers Zachary Parker (Ward 5) said he is sympathetic and Brianne Nadeau (Ward 1) asked for more information.

The Harrington Hotel, at 436 11th St NW, is at a prime spot on Pennsylvania Ave. almost directly opposite the Wilson Building. Assessed at $25.4 million, the hotel closed in December after 100 years and is being marketed for sale by Cushman and Wakefield. The Wardman Team urges the city to move quickly to ensure that this property’s future use includes residential with a substantial amount of affordable/social housing units as one answer to the city’s housing crisis and as a major contribution to downtown revitalization.
