Can Social Housing Get Us Affordable Housing in DC? –  Guest Will Merrifield at DECAA Meeting, Monday Feb. 15, 7 pm

One of the essential challenges that governments are struggling with is the provision for high-quality affordable housing. Mayor Bowser’s ambitious housing program is NOT producing the affordable housing the city needs while it displaces Black and low-income residents, and seriously damages the vision of the 20-year Comprehensive Plan for an inclusive city. Her solution to ally the city’s hopes with profit-driven developers gets us luxury apartments and a reputation as the fastest gentrifying city in the US. #BuildMore is not the answer.

Thinking outside the box, Will Merrifield opens a discussion on social housing that actually gets to the heart of solving our affordable housing crisis in DC. Moreover, it is an idea that is gaining momentum due to its efficiency and logic. Merrifield, formerly an attorney with the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless, is a guest of the Dupont East Civic Action Association (DECAA) Monday, Feb. 15 at 7 pm, by Zoom.
